In this novel set in World War II Poland we meet sisters, Antonia and Helena whose lives are uprooted by the war. Within days th e world they know is shattered by the bombs, causing the sisters to take a second look at their lives. When confronted with  the reality  Antonia makes a hard choice to help the precious little ones that have been forced behind the walls of the Ghetto. But it means losing an relationship with her sister to protect those who are also risking their lives to save the children.

With her sister following a different path in life, Helena finds herself drawn into the  underground secret army. Finding her purpose she chooses to fight for  her precious homeland, alongside  her fellow countrymen. This fight takes Helena away from her beloved sister and down a very dangerous path. The secrets that Helena and Antonia are forced to keep from each other drive a deeper wedge in their relationship. Will the sisters find each other again and find the healing that comes from above? 

This book was a very difficult one for me to read, but I chose to honor my commitment to read and review this book. It is a beautifully written story about sisters and the struggles they go thru as they face the horrors of war. It portrays courage, sacrifice and resilience in a  time of loss and hurting.
